Sometime in the first half of the 14th century, a chapel dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria is built to the south of the chancel of St Peter’s. Catherine was a 4th-century martyr who was killed by the Roman Emperor Maxentius for refusing to renounce her faith. She was condemned to die on a spiked breaking wheel, but it shattered at her touch, so she was beheaded.
