During the Hundred Years’ War, Berkhamsted Castle was an active military fortress and often a royal residence. Many townsfolk had connections with the Castle, among them Henry of Berkhamsted, a knight who served as Constable of Berkhamsted Castle and fought with Edward the Black Prince at the Battle of Crécy in 1346. It is thought that the stone chest tomb in the Lady Chapel of St Peter’s is the tomb of Henry and his lady wife.
