Saints in Colour at the Cathedral

The Wallingford Screen is an ornate 15th-century stone altar screen in St Albans Cathedral, named after Abbot William of Wallingford, who commissioned it for the Abbey in 1480. The beautiful medieval statues barely lasted 60 years until they were destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, and the statues we see today are Victorian replacements. Historians think that the medieval screen and sculptures were painted in bright colours, and today, a digital projection system recreates the colours so we can see how the screen might have looked in the medieval period. Visitors can see the “Saints in Colour” at any time – just ask a Cathedral guide.
