Hornpipe Humoresque
In case you were wondering… last Sunday morning’s organ voluntary was the Hornpipe Humoresque by Noel Rawsthorne (1929–2019), a quirky piece based on the Sailor’s Hornpipe (popular at the Proms). It’s laced with cheeky musical quotations from Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Rule Britannia and Widor’s Toccata, all punctuated by Les Dawson-style comedic wrong notes.
