Berkhamsted Castle drainage works
If you’ve been wondering about the road closures to the rear of Berkhamsted Station, it’s because Hertfordshire County Council are undertaking drainage works. It’s to resolve a long-standing problem where rainwater run-off from Bridgewater Road and White Hill has been flooding the area around Berkhamsted Castle. Historic England has given permission for that water to be channelled via the castle’s outer moat, but this requires a new filtration system and digging out years’ worth of accumulated silt. It’s a complex but fascinating operation involving civil engineers and archaeologists, likely to last into mid-January.
