A farewell to Bishop Alan
Last Sunday, in a moving service at St Albans Cathedral, Bishop Alan ceremonially laid down his crozier and surrendered his pastoral duty into the safekeeping of his successor. The service of thanksgiving included some moving and heartfelt tributes from the Bishop of Bedford and the Lord Lieutenants of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, and the Cathedral Choir and organist provided music by Stanford, Geoffrey Burgon and Fauré, Lang and Vierne. If you missed it, you can catch up on the Cathedral’s YouTube channel, and there are some excellent photographs of the service on the Diocesan website – all via the links below.
“Thank you to the thousands of you who gather week by week in our churches, chaplaincies and church schools across this diocese. Your dedication and witness to the gospel — so often unseen and unacknowledged — have taught me so much about what it is to be a Christian today. As I take my leave of you, I ask only this: fix your eyes not on one another — for we let one another down — but on Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Lord. And let us point others to him, with confidence and joy, for he is the hope of the nations.”
