John Raven memorial

John Raven in armourLook at the stone pillar in the choir stalls; on the side of the pillar there is an engraving of a medieval knight in armour. This is John Raven (died 1385), the squire to Edward the Black Prince (1330-1376), eldest son of King Edward III and father of King Richard II, whose chief residence was at Berkhamsted Castle. This is typical of late medieval memorials, showing the deceased in prayer wearing full battle armour with a lion at his feet. A local road in Bekhamsted, Raven’s Lane, is named after John Raven.
