The Friday Thought | Richard Hackworth Licensed Lay Reader and All Saints Representative |
Sunday is Trinity Sunday. It has been a Principal Feast of the church only since 1134. The church has worshipped in the name of the Trinity since the earliest of times, blessing in the name of the father son and Holy Spirit, and worshipping with liturgy dedicated to the Trinity. However, many people thought that despite this there should be a special day dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The church resisted this until Pope Paul the 23rd gave in, 1000 years after Jesus’. He chose the day after Pentecost, partly because it wasn’t allocated to any other feast. Trinity Sunday is the only principal feast associated with a doctrine of the church rather than with a person or a significant event in the life of the church and Christianity. The Holy Trinity is a foundational doctrine of Christianity – our understanding and perception of the Holy Trinity as Godden three persons, the father the son and the Holy Spirit. We honour and emphasise this every time we say together the creed, and that makes Trinity Sunday especially important. For me, at least, this day commemorates the culmination of the story of God’s creation that we follow and share every liturgical year between advent and Pentecost. We live in the presence and knowledge of the father and son and Holy Spirit forever evermore, and it’s entirely fitting that we dedicate one special day each year to remembering this. The church now enters “Ordinary Time ” until we next arrive at Advent and start the story again. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity isn’t an abstract idea. Before there was a doctrine, there was, and is, the experience of God in three persons in our lives. It is the gift of that experience that sustains us and draws new disciples into the church. The reality of the Trinity in our lives and our faith might no longer surprise us but “ordinary time” seems rather an understatement. It is an extraordinary gift from God that we celebrate on Sunday. Every blessing Richard |

Schools news Berkhamsted School development plans Berkhamsted School have unveiled some interesting development plans. The scheme involves demolition of certain buildings along Mill Street (between the Wilderness and the canal) and constructing new blocks. Of particular interest is the plan to relocate the school coach pickup/dropoff in the coach park of a new sports block, which is to be built on the astroturf playing fields on Lower Kings Road/Greene Field Road. This would hopefully mean an end to the coach parking on Castle Street, as school buses would instead go via Lower Kings Road (and possibly the Wilderness) - download a detailed site plan here. The plans are not yet approved - copious documentation is available on the Dacorum Planning website (Planning Application 26/00768/MFA), where residents can submit comments or objections. |

Next Sunday: 7 June 2026 1st Sunday after TrinityMusic this weekHymns: | Anthem: | Hymn to the Trinity - Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky | | Voluntary: | Fugue in E♭ BWV 552 - J.S. Bach | ReadingsIsaiah 40.12-17, 27-endWho has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the spirit of the Lord, or as his counsellor has instructed him? Whom did he consult for his enlightenment, and who taught him the path of justice? Who taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as dust on the scales; see, he takes up the isles like fine dust. Lebanon would not provide fuel enough, nor are its animals enough for a burnt-offering. All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God’? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Psalm 8 (vv. 1-10)1 O Lord our governor, how glorious is your name in all the world!2 Your majesty above the heavens is praised out of the mouths of babes at the breast.3 You have founded a stronghold against your foes, that you might still the enemy and the avenger.4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have ordained,5 What is man, that you should be mindful of him; the son of man, that you should seek him out?6 You have made him little lower than the angels and crown him with glory and honour.7 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands and put all things under his feet,8 All sheep and oxen, even the wild beasts of the field,9 The birds of the air, the fish of the sea and whatsoever moves in the paths of the sea.10 O Lord our governor, how glorious is your name in all the world! Gospel: Matthew 28.16-20Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’
