Castle Fields

In recent months, there has been a lively public discussion about the fields to the east of Berkhamsted Castle. For many years, this has been a popular walking spot, but last year, it was all fenced off. With property developers buying up land around Berkhamsted, there were concerns that this land would be lost to more housing. The fields are historically significant – in 1216 during the Barons’ Wars, this was the site of a siege of Berkhamsted Castle by an invading French army!

This week, it has been announced that Berkhamsted Castle Trust (BCT) have purchased the land (around 30 acres/12 hectares in size) with the help of a generous philanthropic loan. BCT hope to open the Castle Fields as a natural green space for the public with enhanced historic interpretation of the Castle site. But first, the Castle Trust needs to raise £500,000 within two years to repay the loan. If you would like to donate, you can do so via the Trust’s website at:
