Rectory Lane Cemetery news

Rectory Lane CemeterySummer is blooming in the cemetery, with wildflowers thriving as Friends of St Peter’s volunteers continue with planting and maintenance. The three small Lane’s Prince Albert apple trees are bearing fruit – this heritage variety was originally cultivated by Lane’s nurseries in honour of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their visit to Berkhamsted in 1841. Sadly an ash tree fell victim to ash dieback, and had to be felled for safety reasons. It had sprouted from seed perhaps a century ago, and its removal has revealed a forgotten grave – two blacksmith brothers Richard and Obadiah Pocock who died a year apart in the 1850s. This month, our prayers go with Rectory Lane Cemetery’s ranger, Kate Campbell, who is going for a knee replacement operation this month. We wish her a speedy recovery.
