In 1837, the borders of the vast Diocese of Lincoln, of which Great Berkhamsted is a part, are redrawn and the southern parts transferred to to other dioceses. Hertfordshire churches such as St Peter’s are brought under the Diocese of Rochester. After 50 years, a new Bishopric of St Albans is created in 1877 with St Albans Abbey as its cathedral church. Since then, Berkhamsted has been part of the Diocese of St Albans, which covers Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and parts of north London.
