William of Normandy invades the Kingdom of England and defeats King Harold at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. The Normans advance north and the Saxon nobles surrender to William at Beorhðanstædæ (Berkhamsted). William is crowned King of England in Westminster Abbey on 25 December.
