Historical burial: Bruce Burge
If you live near the Castle, you may be interested to learn about one of Berkhamsted’s architects, Bruce Burge – he designed the Dutch-style houses that stand on Brownlow Road and Castle Hill. He died in 1992, and his grave is in our cemetery on Rectory Lane. Its simple slab was designed by renowned German sculptor Ralph Beyer (who worked with Basil Spence in the 1950s on the new Coventry Cathedral). Burge was the last person to be buried in the lower part of the cemetery.
You can read more about his life in a feature in this month’s newsletter from the Rectory Lane Cemetery team – and you can find out about the volunteering opportunities to help care for St Peter’s historic cemetery this spring!
