Green Flag Award for our cemetery
The Friends of St Peter’s are delighted to announce that Rectory Lane Cemetery has been awarded the Green Flag Community Award once again! The judge visited in June to meet the volunteer grave gardeners and reported, “This is one of best community groups that I have judged in the last 15 years … this is the model that all community groups should aspire to. Excellent work, a pleasure to judge.” Well done to all our volunteers who work so hard to maintain St Peter’s historic burial ground! If you want to get out in the sun and help to look after the cemetery, contact Kate Campell.
There’s more about the Green Flag Award in the Rectory Lane Cemetery July newsletter, plus visits from the Hospice of St Francis, photos of June’s Great Big Nature Hunt, and the story of Alexander Shiels, Scottish inventor, doctor, alchemist, and fraudster, who was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery in 1907. There’s also a focus on the many butterfly species in the Cemetery and an invitation to take part in the Big Butterfly Count.
