Berkhamsted’s War Graves

As Remembrance Sunday approaches, it’s a good time to remember the war graves here in Berkhamsted. During WWI, 200 men and boys from Berkhamsted lost their lives. Most were killed in action were interred in the large battlefield Cemeteries of Belgium and France, but a few returned home and died later as a consequence of their wounds, or in the 1918 Flu Pandemic. Several lie buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery (St Peter’s detached burial ground behind the Rex Cinema), and some family graves are inscribed with memorials to sons who were buried abroad. In the upper part of the Cemetery, there are also graves of those who lost their lives in WWII.

The Rectory Lane Cemetery website has a record of their stories – you can browse the burials online and learn about their lives and their wartime service. The website also works on a mobile phone, so you can discover more while you walk in the cemetery. Why not visit our cemetery this Remembrance Sunday, and learn about Berkhamsted’s wartime sacrifice, lest we forget.
