BBC Choral Evensong 100th anniversary
This year, the BBC marks the centenary of its first broadcast of Choral Evensong on 7 October 1926 from Westminster Abbey. From 1931, the weekly broadcasts began to include regional cathedrals, and later Oxbridge college chapels and then public school chapels (state schools weren’t included until 2022!). Today, Choral Evensong is the longest-running outside broadcast programme in BBC history.
To mark the centenary, the Archive of Recorded Church Music will be streaming a special Choral Evensong compilation on its YouTube channel, with music, prayers and readings from 1926 – 2026. There’s also a fascinating history of BBC Evensongs on their website.
