Advent Carols
Last Sunday we welcomed hundreds into a dark St Peter’s for a candlelit service of music for Advent. A series of readings and congregational hymns were interspersed with anthems by Thomas Tallis, Palestrina, Adrian Davis, Sergei Rachmaninov, Richard Lloyd, James MacMillan and Herbert Howells, and the Great Advent Antiphons. In contrast to the glitter of premature Christmas celebrations, Advent music is at times meditative, glorious or spine-tingling, as it tells us about light, hope, and the promise of salvation. Enormous thanks are due to our choir for all the hard work they put in rehearsing all this music, and to all who read the Advent lessons, making this such a special event in the church year.
