Barbara Conway in the Guardian
Obituaries pages in newspapers traditionally describe and celebrate the lives of “the great and good”, the famous and infamous. The Guardian runs a column called Other Lives which looks at another type of life that deserves noticing: people less in the public eye, those “unsung heroes”, the people we haven’t heard of. In July, they published an obituary for someone we have heard of here in Berkhamsted: Barbara Conway. Submitted by her daughter Fiona, the piece traces Barbara’s fascinating life and highlights the fact that she served as the first female churchwarden at St Peter’s in over 750 years.
