Cowper’s hymn
If you were singing the closing hymn 414 at last Sunday’s Sung Eucharist, “O for a closer walk with God”, you may have noticed the name of the author: William Cowper, noted poet and hymnnodist. Cowper was born in Berkhamsted in 1731, the son of Rev John Cowper, rector of St Peter’s Church. The more eagle-eyed among you may also have spotted words from this hymn etched in the Millennium Window in the north aisle of St Peter’s. This new window was installed in 2000 to celebrates the life and work of Cowper, and is etched with quotes from Cowper’s poetry and images of Berkhamsted landmarks. It is one of two windows in St Peter’s commemorating the poet.
