Volume 14 No. 44 | Friday 27 September 2024 |
The Friday ThoughtThe St Peter’s theology book group has recently been reading Steeple Chasing by Peter Ross. The author is a journalist and writer living in Glasgow. He takes us on a journey around Britain visiting a whole host of churches, from tiny country churches to Cathedrals. Each chapter heading is intriguing – cats, dust, bone, light etc – giving us a clue as to what he is exploring. A visit to Southwark Cathedral introduces us to a much loved cat called Doorkins, whose home was the Cathedral, but now departed this life, and who was granted the honour of a service of thanksgiving for its life. A journey to the Catholic Bar Convent in York reveals the relic of a hand, such are the revelations of a pilgrimage around Britain’s churches. But the author’s journey is not just filled with discoveries that some might regard as weird. His visits take him to churches, where he engages in conversations with people, who are caring for historic churches, and in some instances raising funds to preserve some of the oldest church buildings. As you travel with the author you are made aware of the artistic and cultural treasures that are Britain’s churches, many of them located in the hidden depths of the countryside. Conversations also reveal people of faith and no faith, but who are dedicated to preserving beautiful, historic churches, central to the country’s cultural heritage. St Peter’s might well have been on the author’s itinerary of churches to visit, as we are part of that ecclesiastical cultural heritage. Peter Ross reminds as he visits these churches how all of them receive no state funding, unlike in France. It is the responsibility of the custodians of these churches to raise funds to preserve them for future generations. We are all too aware of what it costs to keep St Peter’s in a good state of repair, and the current roof fund is a reminder of this. We have been supporting the Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust through the annual Bike ‘n Hike, and Fr Stuart walked 28 miles on Saturday 21 September to raise further funds for the Trust. In due course, St Peter’s will receive some of the money raised. Of course, we are not just seeking to preserve St Peter’s as some sort of historic museum. The building is probably the oldest in Berkhamsted but it is a space where God has been worshipped for over 800 years. Today it is the home of a Christian community, whose primary purpose is to sing the praises of God. But it is also a place for the use of the wider community, and also a place where people can come to be still, to pray, to pour out their hearts, and sense in the stillness of the place a presence, God’s presence. By the way – there is another opportunity to boost the roof fund by signing up for the Harvest Supper on Saturday 12 October!

Local parents are warmly invited to bring their youngsters to try out singing at a "Be a Chorister" afternoon event -it's open to boys and girls aged 6+. There will be fun activities tea, juice and cake, and at the end of the day, there’ll be a chance to sing in a short service at 5pm alongside the existing choristers. Parents can meet our friendly music team and ask questions. St Peter’s Church Choir offers fantastic opportunities for children. Many youngsters who start in a church choir find that it opens doors as they get older - Duke of Edinburgh Awards, university applications and getting choral scholarships. You may also be surprised to learn how many of today’s famous musicians found their voice through singing in church – Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake and Ed Sheeran all have a background in church music. Singing in church helps children to develop skills in music, thinking, working as a team and language - skills that will be with them for life. We offer a free musical education, and it's a great way to make new friends! We all appreciate our church choir for elevating our worship and glorifying God through the beauty of music. It is a wonderful thing to have cathedral-style music in a parish church, and to keep this tradition alive, we need to bring in new singers, so please help to promote this event. If your friends, neighbours or co-workers have musical children, please tell them about this. There are leaflets at the back of church, and we'll be posting about it on X and Facebook, so please share! Schools news Victoria School prepares for HarvestWith all the wet weather we have been having it was very appropriate that our Bible story this week was Noah and the flood. We talked about the massive responsibility Noah had of building the ark and gathering all the animals. We felt if we had been asked to do this we would have found it really hard to do. We thought about the message and many of the children mentioned about how important it is for us to look after the world as it a special place. We have started our preparations for our Harvest Festival on Monday 7 October. The Spiritual Ambassadors wanted to get involved with the service and had thought of lots of good ideas on how they could support. This included greeting everyone as they arrived at church, welcoming everyone at the start of the service and reading prayers and poems. We are really looking forward to our first visit to the church this term and celebrating Harvest. |

www.berkhamsted-tc.gov.uk/the-council | Vote in the Green Flag People’s Choice AwardThere's been so much work to restore our once-forgotten Victorian cemetery. This year the volunteers are aiming for another award, and they need your help! Please follow the link below and click the green "Vote for this site" button to vote for Rectory Lane Cemetery in the Green Flag People's Choice Award. It's an easy way to show your appreciation for all the hard work of the volunteers who have been caring for St Peter's historic burial ground over the past 10 years. Thank you for your support! www.greenflagaward.org/park-summary | Rectory Lane Cemetery Project 10th AnniversaryBack in the early 2010s, the PCC was discussing ways of finding new revenue streams for maintaining the fabric of St Peter's Church building and its memorials, buildings and churchyards. Fr Michael Bowie, rector at the time, led the idea of forming a "Friends of" charitable body, and on 15 May 2013, the Friends of St Peter’s (Registered Charity Number 1160314) was launched at a public meeting. Early on, St Peter's detached burial ground behind the Rex Cinema was identified as a "flagship" project which could engage the wider community. This three-acre Victorian cemetery had closed to new burials in the 1950s, and had become an overgrown and neglected patch of land, rich in local history but forgotten and unloved. On 14 September 2014, the Rectory Lane Cemetery Project was officially launched at a special event by by the Mayor of Dacorum, led by the Friends of St Peter's (and with a lot of help from others). In this super photo above, we see a ceremonial release of doves - you may spot the Imbers, Cllr Ian Reay, project convenor James Moir and the fondly remembered David Pearce, who took this project to heart. At a series of events, the public were invited to comment on the proposals for renewing the cemetery. Shaped by the views of community, the project team formed plans, restoring monuments, bringing our local history to life, and creating a green space for all the town to enjoy. Teams of volunteers worked to clear overgrown weeds and trees, and the project team bid successfully for funding from a number of grant-awarding bodies - not least a Heritage Lottery Fund award of nearly £1 million! This funding enabled some amazing work to be carried out, laying new paths, installing new seating and engaging stonemasons to restore historic memorials of some of our most noted parishioners. Today, if you visit the cemetery, you will find a beautifully maintained area, resonating with the names of the past: the Smith-Dorriens, the Bridgewaters, the Coopers, the Hollidays, churchwardens, rectors, bellringers and our war dead. An online database of burials brings all their stories to life for visitors and honours those laid to rest. And alongside manicured lawns, a wildflower area teems with wildlife and rare species. It's a Berkhamsted success story to be celebrated. ReadingsGenesis 28:10-17Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!’ And he was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’ Psalm 103 (vv. 8-13)8 The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness.9 He will not always accuse us, neither will he keep his anger for ever.Response10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our wickedness.11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his mercy upon those who fear him.Response12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he set our sins from us.13 As a father has compassion on his children, so is the Lord merciful towards those who fear him.Response Gospel: John 1:47-endWhen Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’
