Dear friends

All public acts of worship in St Peter's have been suspended until further notice

It is with great regret that I am writing to inform you that, as of this evening, all public acts of worship in St Peter's have been suspended until further notice.  This is in line with the statement made by the archbishops of Canterbury and York earlier today (https://www.churchofengland.org/more/media-centre/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-churches).

That means, most immediately, that tonight's installation in Great Gaddesden of Fr John as Team Rector of the Berkhamsted Team Ministry is now not open to members of the public.  It means that tomorrow's morning's mass will not happen.  Nor will the Walsingham cell group mass planned for this Saturday morning.

Going forward, there will be no 8am Sunday mass or 6pm evening prayer/choral evensong in St Peter's until further notice.  Nor will there be a public gathering at 9.30am on a Sunday morning.

Please know that I will continue to say morning and evening prayer privately each day, offering prayers on behalf of St Peter's, the community of Berkhamsted, for our world, for all those suffering from any form of illness in body, mind or spirit, praying for all those who are struggling, in whatever way, with the isolation that this virus has brought about, and, of course, praying for those who mourn and for those who have died.

At 9.30am each Sunday, I will certainly be present in the church offering prayer and praise.  The form of that worship is still to be decided, and details will appear in due course so that you're aware of what is being done on your behalf.  It may even be possible and appropriate to stream that online so that you can watch it from home; more details on that front will emerge in the next day or so.  But I must emphasise that that Sunday 9.30am moment of prayer and praise in St Peter's won't be a public act of worship, no matter what form it takes.

Do please look out for further emails from us with further details.  And, of course, the church's Facebook page (facebook.com/stpetersberkhamsted/) and website (stpetersberkhamsted.org.uk/) will be updated frequently to reflect latest news from the church and the wider Church of England.  Within the next day or so, I will be offering some prayer resources through the website for you to have to hand at home.  I will be available by email (curate@greatberkhamsted.org.uk) and by phone (01442 864199), and the parish office churchoffice@greatberkhamsted.org.uk (01442 878227) - open each morning - will continue - health-willing - to be the hub of church communications.

In the meantime, do please continue to reach out to one another over the coming weeks and months by all safe means possible; it's amazing how uplifting a 10 minute chat with somebody can be over the phone.  And please rest assured that you are all in my thoughts and prayers as we, as a community looking out for each other and mirroring the love God shows for each and every one of us, journey together through these unprecedented times.

God bless
Fr Simon
