Before the advent of photography, visual records of the Parish of Great Berkhamsted were made by the illustrators and painters of our first 600 years. We have many drawings of St Peter’s dating from the 1830s by the architectural artist John Buckler (1770–1851), a fascinating record of our church before the Victorian alterations. Photography began in Berkhamsted in the late 19th century when Berkhamsted’s first photographer, William Claridge (1797–1876), began to document the people and places of our town.
